On Social Viruses and MEmes

I wish I had more time to expand upon this, but let me say it has been an interesting day watching the Chris Brogan virus spread through the Joyeur community on Twitter.  Interesting of course, because he is staying with us here in San Francisco while he is at TechCrunch 40 and because I was the one who explained to him what was going on – now I just read him some of my favorites from the 150+ I saw here on Terraminds.

So the thing is, this is funny and harmless.  In essence though, it is clogging up his information retrieval agents that are working on his behalf.  Not a big deal as a one day thing, but it really does raise some interesting questions about the role of smart, ad-hoc groups and their ability to form and self organize.  Shows the potential power that the tools provide and how ideas do behave like viruses – and how publishing with key phrases or names can infect people’s information systems like viruses too.  Of course, when it is good creative content with a positive attitude, who’s gonna mind?

Bottom line, I think Kristie is extremely lucky to have such great people in her community – and I am really glad they are on our team 😉

As promised, the funniest I saw came from

  • mrl Chuck Norris is just chris brogan in disguise 11 hours ago
  • andy_martin Chris Brogan? I saw him overthrow an African democracy for the CIA using peanut butter and an extension cord. 10 hours ago
  • fitzage Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is chris brogan. —Yogi Berra 10 hours ago
  • ewmullin Man, the guy who picked Chris Brogan in our fantasy league is killing everyone! 9 hours ago
  • TeddyRoosevelt if theres only one brogan and brogan walks into a room is that considered a bro-verload? 9 hours ago

Sometimes Even Monkeys Fall From Trees

I was talking to Steve Larsen at Stirr the other night when he told me this story about a group he was speaking with about this metaphor when I told him I had shot this… surprisingly it was in a file I was about to delete, so I thought I would put it together quickly and share it here…

We now return to life, as we know it…

Chris and Kristie get marriedIt’s harder then I thought it would be transitioning from wedding mode back to life as we know it. Today is going much slower than I had thought it would and it’s already 4pm with very little done so far. The wedding was just fantastic, everything we wanted it to be – great friends, incredible times and a lot of love.

I uploaded my vows to the wedding Web site, and I am also uploading photos. This photo of our ‘you may now kiss the bride’ moment was the first one uploaded from the wedding by Kris Krug – thanks to Kris and Kim Nelson for all their help in capturing these great moments to share. We already have it printed and in our lovely silver frame we received from sister April and her husband Troy.

More to come over the next couple of weeks…

So What Should I Be Reading On the Beach?

I am heading out tomorrow to pick up a copy of David Weinberger’s “Everything is Miscellaneous” and I am going to scrounge through the dumpsters in Silicon Valley looking for a copy of Andrew Keen’s book “The Cult of the Amateur” (jk, I have to buy it unfortunately).  The thing is, I really want a great summer read, a piece of fiction ideally (other than Harry Potter, which comes out after the wedding).  Kristie is going to be busy reading me her favorite book, “The Riot Act”…

So what is your recommended summer read? What should I buy?

Getting a laugh from job postings…

So I am just now updating my LinkedIn Profile to reflect the fact that I am looking for client’s and looking for opportunities to join an extraordinary team.  If you have some suggestions for me as to what sort of position I should take and/or which company I should really work for, I would love to hear them…

But I came across this job posting, which I just had to share with you.  They are anonymous (hopefully not personal friends, but they might be) and offering equity to someone who understands ‘tagsite linking’ and can deliver 1M+ users in the first week…  I really did not think there was much of a bubble, and there isn’t, but there sure is a lot of delusional entrepreneurs out there!  I don’t think this team is one I would like to join, perhaps it is good for you though?

LinkedIn: Marketing Advisor/CMO at na

Marketing advisor/CMO must have personally headed the marketing effort for one or more successful Web 2.0 companies. Deep knowledge of the most effective tagsite linking methodologies, web related press generation, and viral user accumulation is key. The ability to add 1M+ new registered users to our site during the first week of your tenure with would be considered a plus.

Another job I just saw was looking for 5 years of Web 2.0 and/or Social Media experience… Ah, that brings back the memories of the large corporations looking for 10+ years of Java development experience back in 1998 when Java was but an infant.

I will be on RSS Ray Today (May 23)

Talking about Social Media and Social Media Club, hopefully a bit about the “Listen. Join. Start.” work we are doing for the Social Media Workshop too… From my few conversations with Ray and listening to a few of the archived shows you can download, Ray is a really sharp guy and has a great team working with him on his show. (I wish I could get a producer like Stacey!)

So tune in tomorrow, or if you can’t be there live, go back and download the podcast – I love this stuff and can’t wait to do more of it…

First blog post in a while…

Have not had any time to blog lately – in fact, kind of forced this one out – it only took 70 minutes 🙂  So much stuff to tell you about and so overly concerned with telling the story simply, clearly and effectively that I have been more silent then I should be – will explain more in the next couple of weeks.  In the meantime, here is a post I wrote over on Social Media Club called “Conversations take time, managing them takes energy“.  There is a deeper point here that I did not get to make really well, but in the spirit of writing and getting it out instead of waiting for it to be perfect, here it is…
