    Loaded issue. Not a discussion “on one foot.” But you might want to start with Norman Cousins’s books, especially his last: “Head First: The Biology of Hope and the Healing Power of the Human Spirit.”
    Also see “The Placebo Effect” put out by Harvard University Press
    And check out this fact sheet from the FDA
